Rappers Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice reach the top of the Digital Song Sales chart this week with their new joint single “Princess Diana.” The song, which originally belonged to Spice, was re-released as a remix with new vocals by Minaj, and that version has now become a massive hit, selling just under 76,000 copies in its first full frame of availability, according to Luminate.
With a new win to her credit, Minaj is now the second artist to collect more than one No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart this year.
A little over a month ago, Minaj snagged her first Digital Song Sales chart champion of 2023 when her solo single “Red Ruby da Sleeze” opened atop the purchase-focused ranking.
Spice’s “Princess Diana” remix quickly rose to the top of the charts, thanks to the overwhelming public support once both rappers were involved. Although the original song was released by Spice, Minaj’s remix received more sales than the first take in the past week, which means that both artists are credited for the track’s success this time around. Sales for both versions are combined into one charting entity by Billboard, and it is evident that the public preferred Minaj’s reworking.
The only other artist to claim multiple No. 1 hits on the Digital Song Sales chart in 2023 is Jimin, one of the seven members of BTS. Jimin’s song “Set Me Free Pt. 2” started his winning streak, debuting in first place about a month ago. He then replaced himself with his own “Like Crazy” which remains a relatively rare feat.
“Like Crazy” also holds the distinction of earning the largest sales sum of 2023, as it sold 241,000 copies in its opening frame. The Face single then remained atop the charts for a second week, becoming one of only three tracks to rule for more than one turn so far this year.
With “Princess Diana,” Minaj has now collected a total of 14 No. 1 hits on the Digital Song Sales chart, an impressive achievement that places her in second place among all acts when looking at who has scored the most leaders. Only Taylor Swift has more, with 25 winners, and Minaj’s latest success has moved her closer to that record.
