NewJeans Joins Blackpink, Twice And (G)I-Dle With Their First Radio Hit

For the past month or so, NewJeans have been making history left and right on the Billboard charts. The K-pop girl group reached new highs with their latest EP Get Up and the songs featured on it, with many of them becoming hits in their own way. Now, the band has managed a feat that very few female acts from their home country have accomplished in America.

NewJeans score their first radio hit this week in the U.S., as their single “Super Shy” debuts on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart. The ranking lists the tunes that reach the largest audience at pop radio in America each week. This time round, “Super Shy” enters the tally at No. 38.

With their first radio win secured, NewJeans is now the sixth South Korean girl group to hit the Pop Airplay chart. They are in some very esteemed company, as those who came before them rank among the most successful acts of all time to hail from South Korea.

Currently, Blackpink and (G)I-dle are tied for the most placements on the Pop Airplay chart among K-pop girl groups. Both outfits have pushed a pair of tracks to the list, with (G)I-dle earning their second just recently. The band’s new single “I Do” lifts to a new high on the ranking this week, hitting No. 34.

Fellow South Korean girl groups Fifty Fifty, Loona and Twice have all charted one hit on the Pop Airplay ranking, at least so far. NewJeans is now on the same level as all three of those beloved vocal troupes, thanks to their first win.

“Super Shy” stands out as the biggest hit from NewJeans’s Get Up EP. The short collection debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 back in August, making the band one of a very small number of acts from South Korea to top the ranking of the most-consumed albums and EPs in America. “Super Shy” just fell off the Hot 100 this week after rising as high as No. 48.
