New Shows And Movies To Stream This Weekend On Netflix, Hulu, AMC, Disney+ And More

The surprisingly long and hectic week is finally behind us. Friday evening has landed and the weekend yawns out before us with endless possibilities. Maybe you’re off on a camping trip or kayaking along the coast. Or perhaps you’re off spelunking in dark caverns, or kicking back on a beach somewhere.

Or maybe—just maybe—you’ve found yourself in a zombie infested France, lost and confused like Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) in the new Walking Dead spinoff The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon coming to AMC this weekend.

There are worse fates, of course. You could be The Boy Scouts Of America, an organization that was once widely regarded as a symbol of truth and hard work—before filing for bankruptcy amid tens of thousands of allegations of sexual abuse. A new documentary about that horrific scandal just dropped on Netflix.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

I’ll be reviewing this show weekly as it comes out on AMC and AMC+. The season premiere airs on live TV and streaming this coming Sunday. I admit, I have yet to watch the screener that was provided to me, partly because I want it fresh in my mind when I write my review and partly because Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: Dead City have both aired this year already and I’m just a little bit burnt out on zombies. But never fear, I’ll be covering Daryl’s adventures in France. I’ve heard mixed things so far. Some critics have hailed it as the best thing since early TWD, but my colleague Paul Tassi says it’s very weird and not very good, and I tend to agree with him on a lot of stuff (though not all stuff!)

The Lower Decks Season 4 (Paramount+)

Yet another Star Trek show I’m behind on. I can’t believe Season 4 is already coming out! I’m currently (slowly) making my way through the excellent Strange New Worlds, but I need to give this a go as well. It looks quite funny.

The Changeling (Apple TV Plus)

A very dark-sounding adaptation of the novel of the same name by Victor LaValle, LaKeith Stanfield stars as Apollo, an antiquarian book dealer. (I think it’s funny that LaKeith stars in LaValle’s story here, but that’s just my stupid sense of humor). Things go very dark when he meets librarian Emma (Clark Backo) and they have a baby who she decides isn’t actually theirs—thus, the changeling. Urban fantasy horror that sounds quite gripping. I’ll have to give this one a shot when I’m in the mood for this kind of thing, which I’m not sure I am at the moment!

Scouts Honor: The Secret Files of the Boy Scouts of America (Netflix)

I discussed Scouts Honor up above and I’m definitely not in the mood for something this disturbing. I was actually in the Boy Scouts when I was younger. I was, quite possibly, the worst Boy Scout. If they were to make a sequel to The Last Boy Scout and call it The Worst Boy Scout, that would be me. I never ranked up past Tenderfoot. I just wanted to go camping and couldn’t care less about badges (we don’t need no stinkin’ badges!) or tying knots or any of that crap. I didn’t last long and judging by the horrific allegations of sexual abuse and other atrocities, I was lucky to get out fast (though I don’t think anything untoward ever happened in my troop—but who knows?)

Only Murders In The Building Season 3 (Hulu)

I’ve binged all the episodes currently out for Only Murders In The Building Season 3 and so far I’m quite liking it. Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are both great. I admit, I’m getting a little whiplash from all the red herrings, but I love that this little mystery keeps you guessing. The stars—Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez—are all as charming as ever, though I wish they’d cool it on all the romance stuff. That’s probably my biggest complaint. Both Charles and Oliver are much more fun as eccentric bachelors and Bloody Mabel is a loner through and through. Whatever, I’m still loving it though I was under the impression it all released at once so when I finished episode 6 and nothing came after I groaned audibly in dismay (though it was like 1am and I needed to go to bed anyways).

One Piece (Netflix)

I’m putting this on the list again this week as a reminder to myself to watch it as it looks and sounds great. I don’t watch the anime which I think might make it more enjoyable (since I won’t have to compare it constantly to the original) but it does sound as though fans of the anime are enjoying it a lot also. Bravo, Netflix!

Wheel Of Time — Season 2 (Amazon Prime Video)

I’ve finally made myself watch the first episode of The Wheel Of Time’s second season and it was actually decent. I’m not a huge fan of the books, having only read a couple of them before getting bored, but I did find the first season quite hit-or-miss with some pretty good casting and some pretty bizarre changes from the first book, The Eye Of The World. These changes are even more apparent in the second season, but I can’t decide if that’s a bad thing just yet. I’ll watch the next few soon and report back in a proper review.

Ahsoka (Disney+)

I’ve been struggling a lot with Ahsoka, the latest Star Wars show on Disney+. Its first three episodes were pretty bad, to be honest, but since I watch basically all things Star Wars I’ve stuck with it and lo and behold, episode 4 was actually a lot of fun! (My review here). I’m hoping this marks a new trend for the Dave Filoni-led series. I’d love more good Star Wars in my life. It’s so rare these days.
