New Set Footage Shows ‘Walking Dead’ Rick And Michonne Reunion

We are about to see the debut of Dead City, starring Negan and Maggie this summer, then Daryl Dixon some time after. The last spin-off, that we know about, will be the upcoming Rick and Michonne series, where I’m still not sure if it doesn’t have a title yet, or if the title is “Rick & Michonne.”

This concept originally started as a series of standalone Andrew Lincoln Rick Grimes movies after he left the series, but then became this spin-off which has Danai Gurira (who also left the show) finding and rescuing him from the militaristic CRM which has been holding him prisoner.

There has been a lot of leaked photos from the set for this project, and now we have some footage of a Rick and Michonne reunion as they attempt to escape the CRM together:

Needless to say, it’s excited a ton of Walking Dead fans to see them together, and I mean, no, I’m not going to consider it a spoiler that at some point, these two reunite and will have to flee from the CRM. I mean, come on, that’s the point of the entire series.

I’ve heard mixed reports on what this series is supposed to be. While we think we know it’s six episodes in total, I remember first hearing about that it was meant to be one-off miniseries. Now, according to its Wiki page, it’s intended to be a continuing series instead, with multiple seasons. I think that’s true of the other spin-offs as well, unless I’m missing something.

Rick and Michonne were both featured in the closing moments of the main Walking Dead show, which ended after season 11 very different from the comic given that main characters Rick, Michonne, Carl and Dwight were all missing, with Carl dead, Dwight on Fear the Walking Dead and Rick and Michonne having left a while earlier.

Fundamentally I’ve always suspected that Andrew Lincoln regretted leaving the series, as that’s the impression I’ve gotten from him in interviews. He hasn’t had too many other roles since then, was quick to attach himself to those Rick Grimes movies later. Now it seems he may be back for good in this yearly series, if it is indeed more than just a mini-series.

AMC’s larger plans for The Walking Dead remain somewhat murky past the three shows we know about. Are there more planned? Will those storylines merge for a reunion? What about all this recent stuff with zombies that can open doors and wield knives? Or the European “fast zombies” that Daryl is likely to encounter? A lot of questions, but one thing remains clear: AMC is not anywhere close to letting go of The Walking Dead as a franchise.
