John Mulaney’s upcoming standup special will be making its way to Netflix
The special isn’t Mulaney’s first project to release on the streamer. Baby J will be the third special that Mulaney releases with Netflix following 2015’s The Comeback Kid and 2018’s Kid Gorgeous. He also voices a character on Netflix’s Big Mouth and worked with the streaming giant on 2019’s Emmy-nominated children’s variety special John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch. A filmed version of his two-man show, Oh, Hello on Broadway, was made by the streamer.
The new special was directed by Alex Timbers, who also co-directed Oh Hello for Netflix, and features music from David Byrne. The special was filmed in February 2023 at Boston’s Symphony Hall.
The special comes after Mulaney toured with his emotional live-standup show, John Mulaney: From Scratch. The comedian started touring with From Scratch in 2021 after a publicized rehab stay. The show featured material about his drug relapse and intervention as well as becoming a father with the child he had with Olivia Munn. Mulaney started a relationship with Munn after attending rehab. Mulaney also divorced his wife, artist Annamarie Tendler in 2021.
Mulaney is not only a popular standup but also an actor and writer. Mulaney made a name for himself as a writer on Saturday Night Live. More recently he has worked as a voice actor in Disney’s Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers, Big Mouth and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Netflix has long established itself as a streamer that is serious about standup comedy. In 2022 alone, they released over 40 standup specials. Baby J is set to be the ninth special released in 2023. Other upcoming specials from the streamer include titles from Mae Martin, Mo’Nique and Wanda Sykes.
