New Collaboration Between Meta and Microsoft Brings Llama to Life

The two big companies, Meta and Microsoft, have teamed up for the launch of Llama 2. Developed by Meta, it will feature on Microsoft Windows and Azure, the cloud computing platform.

Rumours of this launch had surfaced long ago,  claiming that it was built aiming for free usage by developers and researchers. Both partners have now verified the rumour via an  announcement made on July 18th, 2023, declaring the launch of Llama 2 for free use for research and commercial use. It will run on Windows.

Meta claimed that Llama 2 was trained 40% more on public data available online and it can process twice as much content compared to its previous version. The company also emphasises that Llama 2 has much more advanced coding, programming, and thus performs better reasoning as compared to all the rest open source large language models (llMs). Besides, they also accept that it isn’t as efficient as GPT4, which is a close source competitor.

Mark Zukerberg in an Instagram post said that Llama 2 gives access to researchers, business man to quilt with the next generation large language model as the foundation of the work.

Llama 2 is Meta’s next generation open source large language model. As it is free for research and commercial use, various people across the tech and academic sector  would definitely approach.

Llama 1 Release has Gained Mixed Response

The limited version of Llama 1 was released in February 2023 but Meta was flooded with at least 100,000 access requests, thereby highlighting its huge demand. The Llama1 version was soon leaked online by users of image board website 4chan.

Though Llama1 is far away from the growth of ChatGPI, according to one report by Reuters in February, Llama shows a huge growth by achieving 100 Million signed up users in the first 3 months of its launch.

Another report in January by Fortune says that $13 Million is invested by the two big players on OpenAI. Microsoft and Meta are involved in delivering the advanced version of Llama, which will surely result better than Llama 1 as it features enhanced qualities.

On one hand, the release of Llama 1 showed the unnerved demand of OpenAI in the market while on the other hand, it was also criticised by some. Two Senators in June have made allegations that Llama 1 lacks the protection, which opens the door for malicious users for criminal activities.

Conclusion

AI has captured the public’s imagination and it has the capability to perform incredible things. It can create opportunities and possibilities and give individuals, creators, and developers a new chance to express themselves and connect with people.

The availability of AI models will serve businesses, startups, research and thus, indirectly serve the society economically and socially. Llama 2 helps in forming the problem fast. It is an improvised version made to fix the vulnerabilities
