It has taken many, many years for larger corporate entities to fully understand what a wildly fantastic the Avatar: The Last Airbender series is, and what it could become if given the attention it deserves. But now, eight years after The Legend of Korra ended, we are heading into a new era. A live-action Avatar series is coming to Netflix, and an adult-Aang era Last Airbender animated movie is getting made.
However, a new report from sources from the widely-read Avatar News site says that something else is happening, and it’s what fans really want to see.
The report says a brand new animated series is being developed for Paramount Plus that will air some time in late 2025 that will focus on the next Avatar in the cycle, the one after Korra, meaning an Earthbender. That’s all the details they have, but given that these cycles are generational, you might expect a series that takes place anywhere from 60 to 100 years after Korra. It may feature some of the same characters (minus Korra herself, except in flashback or “wise sage Avatar ghost” form), but it would once again leap the world forward. The last gap between Aang and Korra moved the world into a sort of steampunk industrial era, and it’s not clear how much things would progress after that.
No further details about this projects are listed by the site, only its mere existence. But that’s enough to get fans excited all the same. The report of this news has 200,000 likes and (thanks to the new impressions metric) 14.3 million views on Twitter, with everyone celebrating the development. It is not confirmed yet, however, if this is the original Avatar team working on the series. Though we know they have been working on more Avatar stuff from Paramount, even though they left the Netflix live-action series a while back.
Regardless, this is the news everyone has been waiting almost a decade for, a true return to the world of Avatar, and it’s wild it took this long to get here. In many ways, the first two series were simply way ahead of their time, and back then, there were controversies with Nickelodeon over budget which led to goofy clip show episodes or abridged seasons. And of course there’s the live action M. Night Shyamalan move that everyone has done their best to wipe from their memories entirely.
But in this age of streaming where everyone is trying to leverage their owned IPs for maximum benefit, it’s time to bring Avatar out of the ice, hence a huge string of years in the near future with loads of new live action and animated content. Hopefully it goes well.
