Netflix’s ‘Sirens’ Twist Ending Explained—What Happens To Simone?

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for the ending of Sirens on Netflix.

Netflix’s new limited series Sirens is easily one of the best thrillers released on the platform this year. If you’ve made it to the ending of the five-episode limited series, you might have a few questions, including what Simone’s twist of fate really means.

The Season 1 finale, titled “Siren Song,” picks up at the hospital, where Simone (Milly Alcock) and Devon (Meghann Fahy) are waiting for Ethan (Glenn Howerton) to wake up after he drunkenly falls off a cliff and breaks multiple bones (he’s miraculously expected to make a full recovery).

What Simone doesn’t know is that the night before, a Vanity Fair reporter shows Michaela (Julianne Moore) a photo of Simone and Peter (Kevin Bacon) – Kiki’s extremely wealthy husband – kissing.

For Kiki, who is trying to prove that her husband is having an affair in order to protect herself from the restrictive prenup she signed, the kiss is about to have dire consequences—not only for her marriage, but also for her relationship with Simone, especially after she had just promoted her to run the foundation in New York.

Simone convinces her sister to join her and her new love interest, Morgan, on a boating trip down to Palm Beach. She assures Devon they’ll hire help for their dad through his VA benefits while she enters a new, happier chapter of her life, no longer defined by her role as his caregiver.

When Ethan wakes up and sees Simone and Peter, he becomes frantic. He starts screaming that Simone is the one who pushed him off the cliff and that she had wings. Simone insists he’s confused. In fact, she claims she was the one screaming for help after he fell.

Devon, meanwhile, tries to find her hometown love interest, Raymond, who traveled to the island with her dad. She remembers leaving him at the beach the night before. She comes across his clothes, wallet, keys, and cell phone, which has 49 missed calls from his wife, Allie. Then she remembers the last thing she said to him the night before: that she’d be better off if he drowned. (Thankfully, we later learn that Ray is alive and was just drunk at the police station.)

Why Does Kiki Fire Simone?

Simone and Peter come back from the hospital. Simone, unaware of what’s to come, asks Kiki what she should do to prep for the gala, but Kiki tells her to wait in her room. When she gets to her room, it’s filled with cardboard boxes with all of her stuff. On top of one of the boxes is the Vanity Fair photo of her and Peter kissing. When Kiki comes up to the room, Simone tried to tell her what really happened – that she pushed Peter away and she ran. But Kiki doesn’t seem to care.

“You are my best friend, and now you’re a threat to my marriage, and you’ve put everything I have built at risk, and so now you have to go.” As a result, Simone and her family were kicked off the property. They find Ray at the jail, who said he got caught in a riptide. Simone’s ailing father apologizes for his negligence when he was a child, and tells Simone that now will be different this time.

Fearing this new uncertain chapter in her life, Simone runs back to the Cliff Mansion, where Peter is also struggling with her firing. He sees her and runs down to the beach, where she say there is one more thing she has to to tell him before she goes for good.

Although we don’t see this on screen, Simone informs Peter that Michaela is keeping their “kissing” photos in case he ever tries to divorce her. The scene cuts to Peter calling Jose in the car, and they have to return back to the mansion instead of going straight to the ferry. Devon decides to go search for Simone. She finds Kiki at the gala and asks where Simone is.

What Happened To Jocelyn Kell?

At the gala, Devon makes a scene and demands to know why she fired her sister in the first place. She also brings up the death of Jocelyn. Kiki reveals that Jocelyn is very much alive and lives on an island off the coast of Washington and hasn’t been seen in public for over 10 years because she was disfigured by plastic surgery after the divorce.

“Half of her face is dead flesh, and she’s blind in one eye,” Kiki said in front of the crowd at the gala. When it came to what happened to Jocelyn, showrunner Molly Smith Metzler told Tudum she wanted to explore how it’s possible to destroy yourself as you’re trying to preserve your status.

“Michaela has that line, ‘We all work for Peter,’ and in a lot of ways what happened to Jocelyn is exactly right, because of course she hurt herself trying to maintain her sirenhood,” she said.

Why Did Peter Leave Michaela?

At the gala, Peter asks to see Kiki in private. He reveals that he’s not happy – and has never been happy – in their marriage. While he blames her for severing his relationship with his children over the last decade, Kiki insists that was all on him, reminding him that he was the one who pursued her. He then tells her that “he is letting her go.”

He’s also upset that she wa planning to spend the rest of their lives with incriminating photos of him (the Vanity Fair photo of him and Simone) hidden in a safe. He says that he had them destroyed. Kiki begs to keep the aviary, but Peter hints that he’s going to give it all to Simone instead. Don’t be the fool that f*cks the assistant,” she says to him.

Peter insists it’s not about Simone, but it’s about him. He says her infertility and the pain she felt about being around his children is the reason she didn’t want him to have a relationship with them. Now, he wants his kids and grandkids to be running freely around the property.

“The story he’s told himself is that Michaela restricted the relationship because she was too upset about her childbearing,” Metzler said.

Peter hints that he might want to have another child one day to extend the Kell legacy, and since Kiki can’t, Simone might be his only chance. He asks Jose to see Kiki out just as Simone comes down the stairs wearing a beautiful dress Kiki had made for her.

As Simone and Peter greet their guests at the gala, Devon notices Peter’s arm on her sister’s back. “You’re with Peter now?” Devon asks, confused. Simone confirms that it only recently happened. When they found each other on the beach earlier, Peter admitted he was falling in love with her.

Bacon told Tudum that his character “definitely falls in love with [Simone].” He continued, “There’s no doubt about that. He’s not using her. He definitely falls in love with her, and he is definitely angry at Kiki for denying him access to his children for all his years. Those are real things.”

Meanwhile, Devon is in shock over what her sister is telling her. “You took her husband,” she says, but Simone doesn’t grasp the severity of the situation. Devon tells her she’s leaving to go back home and take care of their dad, and that dropping out of college to be there for her was the best decision she ever made.

How Does Sirens End?

At the end of the episode, Simone stands side by side with Peter, toasting at the gala. Meanwhile, Devon and her father head home on the ferry. Devon spots Kiki on board and goes to join her, apologizing for accusing her of murdering Jocelyn and running a cult. Kiki accepts the apology.

When Devon asks what she plans to do next, Kiki replies that she has “no idea.” It turns out Kiki wasn’t a cult leader after all, but just a very wealth woman with a passion for caring for almost extinct animals on the island.

“I think it’s very revealing that Michaela wanted to be a mom and couldn’t and has found other ways to mentor and nurture women,” Metzler told Tudum.

What Is The Meaning Of “Hey Hey?”

Devon shares her plans to return to Buffalo and get her own place. Kiki tells her to cash the $10,000 check she gave her. Devon then asks about the meaning of “Hey Hey,” and Kiki explains it was just something she used to say that eventually caught on – because, as she puts it, when you’re a Kell, you make the rules, and people follow.

“You think my sister’s going to be okay with him?” Devon asks.

“No… but who knows,” Kiki answers, adding that it took her husband 13 years to “decide that I was a monster.”

Devon tells Kiki that she’s not a monster, and Kiki responds, “Neither is she,” hinting at Simone now taking over her life.

In the final scene of Sirens, Simone stands on the grounds of the mansion, gazing out at the sunset in a silky blue dress. She’s now Peter’s partner and the new head of the Folger Wildlife Preservation Society, set to inherit all the power and wealth that comes with it, leaving her old life behind.

“One of the reasons it was so thrilling to write the character, Simone, is that I wanted the audience to love or hate what she chooses at the end,” Metzler said. But is Simone now the villain – or simply someone with a tough upbringing who seized an opportunity to secure her future?

The showrunner continued, “I wanted them to really understand why she might feel desperate in that moment to never go back to [Buffalo]. We were very, very careful to let the audience inside what’s making that poor girl tick. I have so much empathy for her at the end, but I know that a lot of people will think she’s a monster.”
