Never Have I Ever is a comedy that follows the high school years of a first-generation Indian-American teenage girl in Sherman Oaks, California. The series follows Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) as she navigates crushes, friendship, family and grief stemming from the recent death of her father.
The show stars Ramakrishnan, Darren Barnet, Jaren Lewison, Poorna Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Ramona Young and Lee Rodriguez. The series also features Niecey Nash and the voice of John McEnroe, amongst others.
While much of the first three seasons feature Devi romantically choosing between Barnet’s Paxton Hall Yoshida and Lewison’s Ben Gross, the fourth season will add a new distraction for Devi named Ethan, played by Love, Victor’s Michael Cimino. The fourth season will cover senior year with college applications, prom, and a confirmed wedding.
The decision to end after the high school years is a strong choice for the show. Many show’s that follow high school-aged students try to stretch out the show by following the students to college or further.
Never Have I Ever premiered in April of 2020 and was initially set to be a semi-autobiographical show about Kailing set in the 80s or 90s. However, the show took on a different form before its release. In July 2020, Netflix reported the series had been viewed by 40 million households globally.
Never Have I Ever is only one of several Netflix shows ending 2023. Other series set for one last season include You, Cobra Kai, The Crown, Umbrella Academy, Manifest and others. However, some of those seasons will likely drop in 2024 as well.
Never Have I Ever is created by executive producers Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, who also serves as showrunner. The series is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, and executive produced by 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein and David Miner.
