It’s not surprising news, but it is welcome: Wednesday has been officially renewed by Netflix. The streaming service apparently just wanted to keep everyone in suspense before dropping the announcement.
“It’s been incredible to create a show that has connected with people across the world,” said co-showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar in a statement. “Thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into season two. We can’t wait to dive head first into another season and explore the kooky spooky world of Nevermore. Just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first.”
Wednesday has already become the third most-streamed show on Netflix, with only Squid Game and Stranger Things outpacing the Jenna Ortega-led dark comedy from director Tim Burton. With that level of streaming success, a second season was a foregone conclusion—even if review scores fell a little short of both those shows.
Stranger Things 1 received a 97% RT score and a 96% audience score; Squid Game received a 95% critic score and an 83% audience score; Wednesday, while still “Fresh” only received a 71% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, though the audience score of 86% was a bit higher than Squid Game.
Netflix announced the renewal on social media:
The announcement was not unexpected today thanks to a not-so-cryptic tweet from Netflix yesterday evening with a video of Wednesday at her typewriter under the caption “??????”
I enjoyed the first season of Wednesday, which I watched with my kids. They both enjoyed it a lot, though we all agreed that Ortega did most of the heavy lifting. The mystery was fun and certain episodes—like the wonderful dance scene—really elevated the show. All told, I’m happy we’re getting a second season. If only Netflix wasn’t quite so quick to cancel less popular shows like 1899!
