As part of Netflix’s new effort to keep you talking about its biggest shows for longer than three days at a time, You season 4 has been split into two parts of five episodes each. The release date for Part 2 is March 9, and a week after the February 9 debut of part 1, Netflix has released a spoiler-filled trailer for Part 2.
While I understand them acknowledging the identity of the killer at this point (spoilers), Rhys Montrose, Joe’s new rival who is killing his rich friends and also running for the Mayor of London, I don’t really understand why the show decided to drop the Love bomb in the closing moments of the new trailer.
Love, as in, Joe’s ex-wife who is supposed to be dead Love, played by Victoria Pedretti, Netflix royalty after her roles in You and the Haunting series. In the trailer she shows up reading a book and greets Joe, who looks understandably stunned to see her.
While I have always wondered if Love may somehow have survived Joe’s murder/suicide story back in the US, because this is TV and if you don’t see a body actively being destroyed, there’s always a chance that some convoluted trick can be pulled where the person secretly survive, I am pretty sure that isn’t what’s happening here.
I believe Love really is dead, as it would be too much back-bending to explain how she survived, and if she was really alive, I don’t think Netflix would have put her in this trailer at all.
So what’s going on? I think Joe is probably hallucinating Love. In an effort to take on a worthy rival serial killer, Joe’s mind conjures up the last “equal” killer in his life, Love, and she will taunt him/help him strategize how to take down Rhys. That’s where I think this is going, and I probably wouldn’t expect to see too much of Love in part 2 as a result, just some cameos.
Still, I think Netflix probably would have been wise to keep Love’s appearance, real or imagined, a secret, rather than sticking it in this trailer. Like, if you watched Part 1 of the show you were almost certainly going to watch Part 2, and that would have been a fun surprise, so I’m not sure what the point of this was. In any case, I’m glad to see Love again. I actually do sort of hope by some miracle she is alive, but I just can’t believe that’s the case, based on all the evidence.
