Netflix had ordered an eight-episode limited series called The Madness, which is described as a conspiracy thriller and will follow a media expert named Muncie Daniels (Colman Domingo) who must fight for his innocence and his life after he stumbles upon a murder in the Poconos woods. The logline: As the walls close in, Muncie strives to reconnect with his estranged family – and his lost ideals – in order to survive.
Clément Virgo (Greenleaf) is set to direct and executive produce the first two and last two episodes.
“The Madness is a fresh take on the conspiracy thriller — turning the genre on its head with its multi-layered characters, propulsive action and swift pace,” said Peter Friedlander, Vice President of Scripted Series, Netflix in a statement. “We are proud to have such a powerhouse team assembled to bring this dynamic story to life for Netflix viewers around the world.”
Last year Domingo won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his recurring role as Ali in HBO’s Euphoria. He has played Victor Strand on The Walking Dead spin-off Fear The Walking Dead, which will open its eighth – and final – season on May 14 on AMC. And his other credits include a co-starring role opposite Viola Davis in the theatrical Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in 2020, and on stage in Broadway musical The Scottsboro Boys, which resulted in a Tony Award nomination.
Stephen Belber will serve as co-showrunner and executive producer on The Madness alongside VJ Boyd. Additional executive producers include Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Kaitlin Dahill.
“Stephen Belber and VJ Boyd thrive in creating suspense driven emotional stories that connect with broad audiences,” noted Jenno Topping, President, Chernin Entertainment. “We look forward to seeing them bring this timely conspiracy thriller to life and to continue our partnership with Netflix.”
Quyen Tran (Maid) and Jessica Lowrey (Perry Mason) will each direct two middle episodes. There are no specifics at press time when The Madness will air.
