The Committee of 100, a grouping of elite Chinese Americans ranging from billionaire entrepreneurs to research scientists, has added eight new members, the New York-based organization said on Thursday. The new additions come from businesses and organizations as diverse as the NBA and Juilliard School.
American citizens of Chinese heritage are invited to join and advance the Committee of 100’s dual missions of promoting the participation of Chinese Americans in all aspects of American life and constructive relations between the United States and Greater China.
Current Committee of 100 members that appeared on the 2022 Forbes Billionaires List unveiled this month include Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing’s former chairman and CEO Morris Chang, Far Eastern Group Chairman Douglas Hsu, Golden Eagle International Group Chairman Roger Wang, Fortinet CEO Ken Xie, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, and Eric Yuan, the founder and CEO of Zoom.
“We are excited to expand our membership with eight new members who will bring diverse expertise and insight to our dual missions,” said Committee of 100 President Zhengyu Huang in a statement. “We look forward to collaborating with them all as we continue to advance the causes of Chinese Americans through institutionalized access, research, data, and thought leadership.” The Committee of 100 has currently more than 130 members.
Here are the biographies of the new group excerpted from Thursday’s announcement:
*Cyndie Chang is a Duane Morris Los Angeles managing partner and litigates business disputes. She has served as president of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, and is currently on the board of the National Association of Women Lawyers, She was the president of the Southern California Chinese Lawyers Association, which awarded her its inaugural Trailblazer award.
*Edward Chang is a neurosurgeon at the University of California, San Francisco, where he chairs the neurological surgery department. His work focuses on the brain mechanisms for speech, cognition, and human emotion.
*Wei He the inaugural artistic director and dean of the Tianjin Juilliard School. He will become CEO in the upcoming academic year. He previously taught at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as a professor of violin for 17 years, Born in Sichuan, He came to the U.S. for undergraduate study at University of Texas at Austin and joined the San Francisco Symphony as a member of the first violin section after graduating.
*Guiyou Huang is the president of Western Illinois University. Before joining WIU, Huang was president of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Earlier, he was the chancellor of Louisiana State University of Alexandria. An author and editor of 13 books and numerous essays and articles, he holds a doctorate in English from Texas A&M University at College Station.
*Nicky Lu chairs of Etron Technology and TM Technology, and is a co-founder of Ardentec, and Global Unichip – four Taiwan-listed semiconductor businesses. Ardentec is 35% owned by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, one of the world’s most valuable semiconductor manufacturers. Lu received his Ph.D. from Stanford University and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
*Michael Ma is the CEO and board member of NBA China. He oversees business development in Greater China. Ma joined the NBA in 2003, rose to become vice president of global strategy, and helped launch NBA China in 2008. Ma holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and a bachelor’s degree in math from Rutgers.
*Margaret Wong is the founder and CEO of McWong International Inc., an industrial IOT lighting company. She serves on boards for the California Chamber of Commerce, California Asian Chamber and Themed Entertainment Association.
*Lily Zheng is a senior partner at Deloitte with more than 25 years of experience in cross-border tax planning. She is responsible for Deloitte’s overall cross-functional services to multinational companies investing Asia as well as Chinese and Asian clients investing in the United States. Zheng is a board member at Huayuan Science and Technology Association in Silicon Valley. Zheng holds degrees from UC Berkeley and Golden Gate University.
