Christopher Haynes, a 30-year-old charged with a homicide offense, escaped police custody at George Washington University Hospital after he was arrested Wednesday, prompting a shelter-in-place order for students at the nearby university.
Key Facts
Haynes was described by the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department as a six-foot tall, 205-pound man with a medium brown complexion, black hair and brown eyes.
Haynes is considered armed and dangerous and was last seen Wednesday at approximately 3:30 p.m. wearing a black T-shirt and gray shorts underneath a white jumpsuit, according to authorities.
MPD also reported Haynes was wearing one red shoe—with on-scene photos posted by GWU’s independent student newspaper, the GW Hatchet, showing a police officer holding what looks like Haynes’ other shoe.
Students at George Washington University, which has classroom facilities within a block of the hospital, were asked to shelter in place Wednesday.
Key Background
Several blocks in the area of the hospital have been closed for the manhunt, according to NBC Washington. Haynes’ escape prompted a large-scale response from local police, who are searching for the suspected murderer with vehicles, K9 officers and a helicopter, according to the Hatchet.
