Despite the fact that Ms. Marvel does not debut on Disney Plus until tomorrow, reviews are now going up from critics who has access to screeners for at least part of the series. And while they are still trickling in as I write this, there’s been one bit of consistency so far:
They’re almost all good.
Right now, with a handful of reviews in, Ms. Marvel is batting a perfect 100% score. That’s seven positive reviews from critics, most of which are citing newcomer breakout star Iman Vellani as the reason the series works so well. The show is pitched as a “coming of age” style superhero story, and is the first PG-rated Disney Marvel fare. But the reviews say it’s full of heart and charm and hard not to like. (Update: A new dump of reviews say that 45 reviews are now in, 43 fresh, 2 rotten, a 95% score)
Here’s a sampling of some of what critics are saying about Ms. Marvel so far:
- Comicbookmovie (5/5): “Iman Vellani establishes herself as an immense talent in Ms. Marvel, a culturally rich and diverse new entry into the MCU that adds some incredible new characters and explores unexpected sides of this world. Prepare to meet your new favourite superhero.”
- Comicbook.com (5/5): “Kamala Khan is going to be a star before the Marvels lifts off next year. Ms. Marvel lays a great foundation for the character among casual audiences. Who is she? Well, the Disney+ show argues that she’s a hero and a pretty awesome one at that.”
- ScreenRant: “Ms. Marvel excels at world-building, fleshing out Kamala Khan and her relationships while infusing a bit of mystery and intrigue into the story.”
Again, it’s too early to tell with too few reviews in to see where Ms. Marvel will settle in the grand scheme of the other MCU series on Disney Plus, but as a reminder, here’s what we’re working with based on the last year+ worth of entries:
- What If…? – 94%
- Loki – 92%
- Hawkeye – 92%
- WandaVision – 91%
- The Falcon and the Winter Soldier – 86%
- Moon Knight – 86%
As such, I don’t expect Ms. Marvel to stay at 100%, but if these early reviews are any indication of what’s to come, this certainly isn’t going to be a miss from Marvel, which really, has not fully missed yet on any of these series. My prediction is that it will stay above a 90%, and be near the top of this list in the end. I’ll keep an eye on it as more reviews come in.
Tomorrow’s debut of Ms. Marvel means that we will have a Marvel show overlapping with a Star Wars show, given that Obi-Wan still has half its six-episode run to go as Disney finally has a fuller slate of shows. Ms. Marvel is also just six episodes, and like most series, it’s not clear if Disney is going to be shooting for a second season, or just be content with Kamala showing up in The Marvels, the feature film scheduled for July 2023. But whatever the case, it seems like season 1 is not to be missed.
