Topline
Most American voters believe the investigations into former President Donald Trump should continue, according to a poll taken just after Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate was raided by the FBI and several of the former president’s allies faced worsening legal problems.
Key Facts
According to an NBC News survey published Sunday that polled 1,000 people, 57% of registered voters said the probes into alleged wrongdoing by Trump should continue, while 40% say they should end.
Voters’ opinions varied widely based on their political party affiliation, with 92% of Democrats, 61% of independent voters and only 21% of Republicans agreeing the investigations should go on.
The poll was conducted between August 12 and 16, amid fallout from a raid on the former president’s Florida residence and Rudy Giuliani revealing he has been targeted in a Georgia grand jury investigation into election interference, and after the Trump Organization’s longtime CFO pleaded guilty to criminal tax fraud charges.
Key Background
Trump, his family business and his allies are entangled in multiple state and federal investigations, though Trump has not faced any criminal charges. The former president is facing a probe into his administration’s alleged mishandling of White House documents during and after his term in office, prompting FBI agents to execute a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago earlier this month. He has also been implicated in an ongoing congressional investigation into the January 6 Capitol riots, when Trump’s supporters laid siege to Congress, and federal prosecutors have reportedly asked questions about Trump’s efforts to reverse his election loss ahead of the Capitol attack. The New York Attorney General is also conducting a civil investigation into whether Trump’s business inflated the value of his assets in a scheme to obtain loans and tax breaks under false pretenses, and the Manhattan district attorney has criminally investigated the Trump Organization’s financial practices and charged the company with tax fraud. A county prosecutor in Georgia is also probing Trump’s behavior as part of an investigation into false allegations of voter fraud made in the wake of the 2020 presidential election.
