It’s Memorial Day which means it’s very nearly the last day of May and a great day to spend with friends and family outside at a picnic or a barbeque just enjoying good food and good company.
It’s also a good time to remember all the men and women who have died fighting to protect our lives and freedoms. Whatever your opinions on the wars themselves, the soldiers who put their lives on the line and pay the ultimate price deserve to be remembered.
The day itself—or some version of it—has been celebrated across the country since the late 1800’s, but it was only formally recognized as a federal holiday called Memorial Day in 1971 when Congress standardized the holiday. Unlike the Armed Services Day, which celebrates active military personnel, or Veteran’s Day, which celebrates veterans, Memorial Day is specifically a day to honor the fallen.
Still, it’s not exactly a day of mourning. More of a day to spend time enjoying—and acknowledging—the very freedoms we often take for granted.
And, perhaps, you can sneak in a quick game of Wordle. Today’s Wordle word of the day is kind of a tricky one, but that’s why I write these guides—to offer a hint to help you get there and the answer if you can’t.
Let’s take a look.

Today’s Wordle hint: Coral reef.
Today’s Wordle answer:
So yeah, kind of a tricky word with the double ‘L’ and just not many people using atoll in day-to-day conversation. An atoll is like an island but made out of coral and essentially just a ring with water in the center of it. The definition is, “a ring-shaped reef, island, or chain of islands formed of coral.”
Here’s a visual aid:
They take all kinds of shapes and are really quite stunning.
My first guess, spate, earned me a ‘great opening word’ from Wordle Bot, who noted that it will typically cut down possible solutions to just 100, though this time it got me down to 67.
Train cut the total number of solutions down to 23 but total would have been better according to the bot, and I can see why. Train was a bad guess mostly because it left the ‘A’ in the same yellow box. Sigh.
Caulk did the trick, reducing possible solutions to just one, and remarkably I came up with atoll seconds later. Almost no brainstorming needed this time! Go figure.
Enjoy your holiday, dearest Wordlers!
