Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II has shattered all previous sales records for the long-running first-person military shooter franchise. The game already set records when it crossed $800 million in sales after just three days. Now, in just 10 days Modern Warfare II has raced past the $1 billion mark.
This is an extraordinary number and represents a real return to form for Call Of Duty, especially after the lackluster performance of Vanguard in 2021.
It’s not quite as big as the launch of GTA V, however. That game crossed $800 million in just 24 hours and $1 billion in three days, and continues to top sales charts nearly a decade later, with well over 100 million copies sold.
Still, this is a huge win for Infinity Ward and Activision and the entire ‘Call Of Duty: Next’ project, which includes the launch of Warzone 2.0 and Season 1 of both titles on November 16th, just over a week away. While the game’s launch has been anything but smooth—it’s one of the buggiest, crash-happy launches I’ve ever experienced with a Call Of Duty title—the game itself is quite good. I’ll have my initial multiplayer review up soon. My review of the single-player campaign is right here. I thought it was quite good.
The previous record for a Call Of Duty title was Black Ops II which racked in $1 billion fifteen days after launch. That was one decade ago almost to the day.
Activision says that over 200 million hours of play-time and 1 billion matches have been played since launch across Xbox, PlayStation and PC.
“The incredible momentum driving Modern Warfare II is a direct reflection of the energy and passion of the Call of Duty community,” said Johanna Faries, General Manager, Call of Duty. “As we look ahead to an unprecedented level of support for Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0’s launch next week, we are motivated to deliver again for the best player community in the world.”
