Today on September 7th, the movie trailer on YouTube exceeded more than 1 million million dislikes. While the likes count has only reached 575k. The fans of the game seemed to have different expectations of the world shown in the trailer.

The start of the trailer is what the fans liked the most. It gives fans the sense of finally experiencing the actual square world on a big screen, after that, it takes a downhill. The first look at the characters played by top stars Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, and Danielle Brooks didn’t seem to satisfy the fans. Specifically the costume design of these characters.

Secondly, the mobs in the trailer are looking bizarre according to the fans. They have the blocky touch but not like the game.

And finally choosing Jack Black as Steve has made fans more disappointed.  Steve is the main character in the game who is originally brown and opposite looking than Jack Black.

Minecraft Movie has turned into “the Ugly Sonic Situation”

The situation with the Minecraft movie reflects what happened with the original sonic design. The fan backlash made the makers moderate Sonic’s look into game-like. There is no reaction from the makers to the backlash of fans yet, however, there is always a possibility. In Minecraft’s case, it’s not one character but multiple aspects that fans would like the makers to review.

The ironic part is during an interview with the Salt Lake Tribune, the director Jared Hess shared he is “trying to avoid ‘Ugly Sonic situation’”. After the release of the trailer, one can say it happened opposite to what he said.

Another angle to see this is that makers might be cashing out on this debate for publicity as some people also believe what Sonic creators did.

The reactions of the fans on social media suggest that movie makers went overboard with their creativity. If only they would have kept things simple by putting in exactly game-like things, fans may have seen it differently. One tweet by @CondorPana also suggests “It would have been cooler if when entering the portal they would change their physical form to one similar to Minecraft”.
