Topline
Legendary boxers Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield announced a collaboration on a line of cannabis edibles Monday, a surprise partnership between the former heavyweight champions considering Tyson famously munched on Holyfield’s ear during a 1997 match.
Key Facts
The product line is named “Holy Ears,” a play on the unfortunate incident between the two during Holyfield’s defense of the 1997 heavyweight title.
The edibles will be for sale from Tyson’s cannabis line Tyson 2.0 in Arizona, Illinois, Nevada and New Jersey later this month.
Tyson 2.0’s parent company Carma Holdings also announced the 2023 launch of Holyfield’s own cannabis brand, with Holyfield calling cannabis “the medicine we really needed throughout our careers” in a press release.
Surprising Fact
This won’t be the first Tyson will try to profit off of the Holyfield bite: He launched a “Mike Bites” edible line in March. The “Mike Bites” gummies depicted right ears missing a chunk from the top – the same part of Holyfield’s ear Tyson sank his teeth into two decades ago.
Key Background
Considered one of the greatest boxers and hardest punchers ever, Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion ever in 1986, but Tyson is equally well-known for his controversial life outside of the sport. Tyson spent three years in prison following a rape conviction, returning to the ring in 1995 following his release and fighting Holyfield in heavyweight title bouts in 1996 and 1997, losing both times.
Crucial Quote
Tyson told the Huffington Post about the collaboration: “If I was on cannabis, I wouldn’t have bit [Holyfield’s]
ear!”
