While the start of the upcoming Major League Baseball (MLB) season is still in doubt, trading card firm Topps continues to sell baseball-themed non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
In an OpenSea auction that ended Friday about 19:00 UTC, the first edition of the company’s “Topps Timeless Series,” an NFT of the iconic 1952 baseball card of New York Yankees star Mickey Mantle, sold for 175 ETH (around $471,000).
“The Mick” collectible
In July, Gemini co-founder Tyler Winklevoss purchased an NFT of Yankees star Lou Gehrig’s famed “luckiest man” statement for $70,000, making it the highest baseball-related NFT transaction to date.
As part of the “The Mick” collectible, which is officially licensed by MLB and sold in partnership with the Mantle Estate, the winning bidder will also get a 30-minute interview with Danny and David Mantle.
The Mantle boys commented, “for 70 years, this card has been part of my father’s legacy, and it is incredible to witness its enduring influence among baseball fans and collectors around the globe.” “Through NFTs, we’re able to share this piece of precious history in a fresh and interesting way.”

Huge baseball card market
In August, the trading card company migrated its NFT marketplace on the Avalanche blockchain, coinciding with the release of its first MLB-licensed collection, “Inception,” -currently selling for roughly $2 each.
Depending on graded conditions, the actual cards on which the NFT is based are still some of the most popular sought-after in the baseball card market, with current prices ranging from $30,000 to $250,000.
In January, sports retailing behemoth Fanatics paid $500 million for Topps. Fanatics announced a $1.5 billion fundraising round on Thursday, valued at $27 billion is also the owner of baseball NFT marketplace Candy Digital, which promotes the Mantle sale, in the weeks leading up to the auction.
The auction tops NBA Top Shot’s record sales of $230,000 and $210,00 for limited edition LeBron James items, making it one of the largest-ever in the sports NFT scene.
