Metaverse Rocks Here Too
‘Metaverse’ is thriving hard in the race of Oxford’s “Word of the Year” (WOTY) competition organized by Oxford University Press (OUP), which is the publisher of the world-famous Oxford English dictionary.
This is the first time the public can vote for the competition. Voting will get closed at 00:01 AM on Friday, 2 December. The three words among them are “Metaverse, and the two other are “#IStandWith” and “Goblin Mode.”
It was selected by the team of lexicographers from OUP, stating that each term became relevant in a different way. As described by OUP on Twitter, Metaverse is “a hypothetical virtual reality environment in which users interact with each another’s avatars and surroundings in an immersive way.”
“Metaverse” was first used in Neal Stephenson’s famous novel Snow Crash, written in 1992, where it was referred to as a 3D virtual world filled with avatars of real people.
Global increasing interest and popularity among the Metaverse have too soared an inclination to Ready Player One, Ernest Cline’s novel written in 2011 and the movie released on the same concept in 2018.
As on 21 November, OUP mentioned about the multiverse in a Tweet-
“Usage increased as we discussed #hybrid working, debated the ethics, and wondered about the feasibility of an entirely online future.”

According to BBC news media, “#IStandWith” “recognises the activism and division that has characterized this year” and is in trend to express solidarity with a social cause, or opposition, for example, in the Ukraine war with dominant Russia, in the case of violence with Johnny Depp. by cruel beauty Amber Heard. The phrase became a part of political activism. The hashtag has over 2.8million views featured on TikTok.
As per the OUP, “Goblin Mode” is a slang phrase linking back to 2009, which is used for lazy, dissipated and greedy, and going against social measures. The phrase “Goblin Mode” became more usual after the COVID-19 lockdown period, being used for the people who rejected “returning back to normal” and going their own way.
From a total share of voting, “Metaverse” has 34%, “#IStandWith” is 15.6% and “Goblin Mode” is at 50.4%. The three terms were chosen as the OUP ran an observance on a language data system to select the three from all candidates.
Another in the list is “Platty Jubes” is an internet term for the Queen’s platinum jubilee, and the other one is “queit quiting”, used in the sense of serving minimum below your job responsibilty.
As the sources suggest, the entire metaverse market is predicted to be whopping, ranging from $8 billion to $13 trillion until 2030. The Meta (Facebook rebranded) founder Mark Zuckerberg’s vision is to create the metaverse and take the world to an entirely different phase of the internet. Other prominent companies, such as Microsoft, Google, NVIDIA, etc. They are betting billions on the metaverse.
