- Report says users are abandoning the Horizon metaverse.
- Meta is constantly updating the digital space to make it better.
- The company’s target to attain 500K Monthly Active Users (MAU) has dropped to 200K.
Light on The Horizon was Brighter Yesterday
The sun appeared to be shining on the Horizon but it seems like it is getting low now. Mark Zuckerberg’s vision to create an open and connected metaverse for users is nowhere close to achieving the goal yet. The Wall Street Journal got their hands over Meta’s internal documents which shows a darker time for the organization.
The company has failed to attract a lot of users in their metaverse unlike its social media platforms. Where Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp are pulling over 3.5 Billion users every month, Meta has failed to attract even 500K users in the Horizon worlds. This has led Zuckerberg to lower their target from onboarding 500,000 to 200,000 monthly active users on the platform.
People reported poor graphics, unable to meet like minded people, find digital spaces they like and more, making Horizon unfitting for them. The company said that users won’t return after spending a month on the platform. This can make things harsh for Meta in future. The company had to kill its stablecoin project, Libra, upon the public backlash.
But the users should not take decisions based on products’ beta or alpha phases. Many popular games like Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, God of War, Call of Duty: Warzone and more were not able to attract a lot of attention due to the glitches in their testing stages, but their official releases tell a different story. Similarly, Horizon is going through its infancy and users should not judge the platform too early.
Mark Zuckerberg shared a low resolution selfie in August 2022, where users mocked it over the internet. But Meta CEO made up for the mistake and uploaded a higher resolution image on Instagram. He said that the company can do much more than this, and Horizon is improving really fast.
Recently, during the Meta Connect Conference, Zuck Bucks marked the launch of Meta Quest Pro and showed off his digital avatar legs in the video. It showed that the company is really focused on their long term vision to create a metaverse. Meta CEO changed the organization’s title from Facebook in October 2021, and has focused on developing virtual spaces since. According to the reports, they have spent over 15 Billion USD in Reality Labs for research and development.
If Meta wants to retain the users, they need to give people what they want. Folks have provided the reasons for the lower MAU already on a silver platter to Meta. Now it is up to the organization how they will make the best out of it to retain the users in Horizon.
