Meadows Warned January 6 Could Be ‘Real Bad’ Days Before Riot, Aide Says

Topline

White House officials privately expressed concerns about plans for a rally during the certification of election results on January 6, 2021, former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson told the House committee investigating the Capitol riot Tuesday, saying former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows warned “things might get real, real bad on January 6.”

Key Facts

Hutchinson testified that she had a conversation with Rudy Giuliani, then former President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, as she walked him out of the White House on January 2, in which Giuliani told her “we’re going to the Capitol” on January 6.

Hutchinson said the conversation left her confused, so she went to Meadows, her boss, to ask about January 6, who informed her things could get “real bad.”

John Ratcliffe, the former director of national intelligence, also expressed concerns January 6 could “spiral out of control,” according to Hutchinson.

Hutchinson testified the plans for a rally and what she called “tentative movements to go to the Capitol” left her “scared” and “nervous” leading up to January 6.

Key Background

Tuesday’s hearing is the sixth from the January 6 committee this month. It was abruptly announced with just around 24 hours notice because of “new information” Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), committee chairman, said the American people needed to hear “immediately.”
