Mariners Sign Rookie Phenom Julio Rodriguez To Massive Contract Up To $470 Million

Topline

The Seattle Mariners reportedly signed rookie phenom Julio Rodriguez to a massive 14-year contract on Friday with $120 million guaranteed and up to $470 million if the team exercises an option to extend the deal up to 18 years—making it the biggest contract in the history of the league.

Key Facts

Rodriguez’ contract comes with a base of eight years, starting this year and running through the 2029 season, at which point the Mariners can extend the contract another eight or 10 years, ESPN reported.

The guaranteed money owed to Rodriguez increases to $320 million if the Mariners agree to the option to extend his contract by eight or 10 years, although both parties have options in the contract worth between $210 million and $470 million.

The exact length and payout of the contract also depend on Rodriguez’ MVP voting, ESPN reporter Jeff Passan posted in a tweet.

If Rodriguez reaches the $470 in the contract, it would place him above the Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout, whose $426.5 million contract is currently the biggest in Major League Baseball.

Rodriguez is batting .269 on the year, with 20 home runs, 64 runs batted in and 20 stolen bases, and his impressive season earned him a spot last month in the All Star Game and the home run derby, where he slugged 81 home runs, falling short in the final round to Juan Soto, who turned down a whopping $440 million offer from the Washington Nationals and was later traded to the San Diego Padres.

Key Background

The Dominican-born Rodriguez has been a critical part of the Mariners’ offense this season, as the team looks for its first playoff berth since 2001. The Mariners are currently in second place in the American League West, behind the surging Houston Astros, although in the MLB’s new playoff structure, the Mariners are currently in second for three wild card spots, behind the Tampa Bay Rays and above the Toronto Blue Jays.
