Topline
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg pushed back Thursday against demands from top House GOP leaders to testify about his investigation into former President Donald Trump, calling their request an “unprecedented inquiry” into a local prosecution and questioning its legislative purpose, as the Trump criminal probe appears to be wrapping up.
Key Facts
Bragg called the letter, written by Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), James Comer (R-Ky.) and Bryan Steil (R-Wisc.), an “unlawful incursion into New York’s sovereignty” and said that Congress was not the “appropriate branch” to review a pending criminal case.
The Manhattan District Attorney suggested the inquiry came at the request of Trump’s lawyers, who Bragg said urged House GOP members to intervene, and noted it “only came after Donald Trump created a false impression that he would be arrested” on Tuesday.
Bragg is investigating Trump’s role in making purported hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election.
