Manchester United have announced they will travel to the United States later this year to play a series of pre-season games ahead of the 2023/2024 Premier League season.
This will be United’s first tour of the United States for five years and they have been keen to return to take advantage of the leading training facilities on offer there and to play in front of their US fans in some of the world’s best stadiums.
As there is no global international tournament this summer the United manager Erik ten Hag is likely to take a very strong squad of players across the Atlantic.
United have not yet announced which cities they will be staging games in, but will reveal them in the coming weeks. There has already been early speculation they could visit San Diego and Las Vegas.
“Everyone at the club is looking forward to it, especially the players, who love the high-quality facilities, the welcoming atmosphere and passionate support of our large US fanbase,” said the Manchester United Football Director John Murtough.
“As well as engaging with our fans, Tour 23 will give Erik and his squad the opportunity to reconnect with each other after the summer break and prepare for the restart of the Premier League.”
“We’ve worked with the manager and his staff to create training camps with the best sporting facilities available, as well as a mix of competitive opponents to play, ensuring that the whole squad will have the best opportunity to gain fitness and playing time during their time in the US.”
“Tour 2023 will not only see the return of our senior players to training and playing, but there will also be valuable opportunities for up-and-coming talent from our Academy to experience life within the first team environment, and for our US fans to see some potential stars of the future.
“We know that Manchester United and the Premier League in general are growing in popularity across the US, so we are looking forward to building on this connection this summer.”
On United’s last visit to the United States in the summer of 2018, with Jose Mourinho as the club’s manager they played five games in five different US cities.
United opened with a 1-1 draw with Mexican side Club America in Phoenix, Arizona, before drawing 0-0 with the San Jose Earthquakes at the Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California and beating AC Milan 9-8 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Carson, California.
The tour moved on to Ann Arbor, Michigan where United lost 4-1 to their rivals Liverpool in front of over 101,000 fans at Michigan Stadium, before they played their final game at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, where they recorded a 2-1 win over Real Madrid.
