Madonna is currently experiencing a remarkable career resurgence, landing consecutive hits on the Billboard charts in the past two weeks. This time around, she not only appears on multiple rankings once again, but she also secures her first No. 1 on a chart that some might assume she has dominated for a long time.
The Queen of Pop returns this week with “Vulgar,” her collaboration with fellow pop superstar Sam Smith. The song makes its presence felt on several Billboard charts, although it misses out on the Hot 100. While they were surely hoping to reach that ranking, the cut does stand out as the best-selling track in a specific genre.
“Vulgar” debuts at No. 1 on this week’s Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart, which ranks tracks that can be classified as dance or electronic (or both) based on sales figures. This chart differs from the Hot 100 or the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs rankings, as it solely focuses on sales and excludes other forms of consumption like streams and radio play.
Madonna and Smith’s “Vulgar” claims the top spot on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart with a little more than 2,600 copies sold, according to Luminate, a data collector that provides consumption data to Billboard for chart compilation.
Amazingly, “Vulgar” marks Madonna’s first No. 1 on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart. Billboard introduced this list after many of her dance hits had already had their moment in the sun, so it’s not entirely surprising that she doesn’t have more chart-toppers on this particular tally. With “Vulgar,” Madonna has now entered the chart with 20 different tracks, and six of them have reached the top 10.
According to Billboard, Madonna’s highest-charting hit on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart is “Levitating” by Dua Lipa. However, it’s a bit confusing as Madonna’s name isn’t listed alongside her fellow pop star’s, despite being featured on one version of the song. It’s possible that they charted together at some point, even though it’s known as Lipa’s hit. “Levitating” peaked at No. 2 on the chart. Madonna’s second-highest-charting singles are both “Frozen” (a recent remix of her song with Sicknick) and “Living For Love,” which reached as high as No. 5.
