Madonna returns to the U.K. charts as The Immaculate Collection and “Music” both reappear, showing … More
Madonna is enjoying something of a minor comeback in the United Kingdom this week — momentary, perhaps, and certainly not overwhelming, but still worthy of noting, especially considering the fact that there’s no major reason for the return. The pop icon reappears on a pair of charts in the country this week, making space once again with both a beloved album and one of her more recognizable singles. The two titles have become bestsellers once more, and she once again asserts herself as one of the most successful names in pop music history.
The Immaculate Collection Returns to the Albums Chart
Looking first at albums, just one of Madonna’s compilations finds space on the charts in the U.K. as The Immaculate Collection returns to the Official Albums Downloads ranking at No. 69. The Immaculate Collection has now spent 130 weeks on the U.K. download ranking. Despite its longevity, the collection has never even broken into the top 10 on this particular list. Its highest position remains its No. 11 peak.
One of Madonna’s Most Successful Compilations
The Immaculate Collection was released in 1990 and immediately became a global success, as had been the case with everything she’d ever shared with her legion of fans. The compilation gathers many of Madonna’s biggest hits from the first decade of her career, including “Holiday,” “Like a Virgin,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” and “Like a Prayer.” At the time, it was seen as a definitive showcase of her pop dominance — and over the years, it has become one of the bestselling compilations by any solo artist in history.
“Music” is a Bestseller Again
When it comes to individual tracks, Madonna sees just one of her hits return to the charts in the U.K. this week. “Music” finds its way back onto the Official Physical Singles chart, landing at No. 73. That list ranks the top-selling songs across any physical format, including CD, cassette, or vinyl.
Unlike The Immaculate Collection, which never managed to crack the upper tier of its ranking, “Music” is already a former chart-topper on the roster it reappears on. The single has now spent 26 weeks — exactly half a year — on the Official Physical Singles list.
Madonna’s “Music” Was a Sonic Shift
“Music” dropped in 2000 as the lead single from Madonna’s album of the same name. The cut marked a sonic pivot for the superstar, leaning into electronic and dance-pop influences while still managing to sound unmistakably like her. It quickly became one of her biggest late-career hits and a global smash, hitting No. 1 in a number of major markets.
