Warner Bros. Discovery has named Luis Silberwasser Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery Sports, where he’ll lead the company’s domestic sports portfolio and oversee its global sports strategy.
Silberwasser will report to David Zaslav, Chief Executive Officer, Warner Bros. Discovery, with whom he previously worked.
“I have known Luis for many years and have tremendous respect for how hard he works, how collaborative he approaches the job, and his ability to build very successful global businesses and brands,” said Zaslav. “I am thrilled to be working with him again, and believe Luis’ strong international business relationships, leadership track record and passion for delivering the best content and consumer experience make him the ideal leader to oversee the continued growth and expansion of our world-class sports business.”
To take over the new role, Silberwasser will leave his post as President of Univision Television Networks Group, where he oversaw the company’s U.S. broadcast and cable networks that include the entertainment, news and sports content divisions. The Spanish-language media company brought him on board in January 2021, prior to its content merger with Televisa.
Following Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement, TelevisaUnivision Wade Davis CEO issued this statement about his departure: “We thank Luis for his leadership in the expansion of Univision Network’s audience lead, across the company’s portfolio of national broadcast and cable television networks,” said Wade Davis, CEO of TelevisaUnivision. “I want to personally wish him good luck in his new endeavors.”
Silberwasser, who was President of Telemundo networks before Univision, previously spent 16 years at Discovery Communications, where he held several positions of increasing leadership responsibility, ending his run as Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer at Discovery Networks International. According to the company, in that role, Silberwasser was instrumental in building its international business, as well as guiding its early focus on live content, including sports.
Lenny Daniels, President, Turner Sports, and Patrick Crumb, President, Regional Sports Networks, will report to Silberwasser. Andrew Georgiou, President & Managing Director, WBD Sports Europe, will continue to report to Gerhard Zeiler, President, International.
