The new NFL year is bringing a new-look to the Los Angeles Chargers offensive line, with a touch of something familiar.
Trey Pipkins III, L.A.’s right tackle, has agreed to a fresh deal in exchange for forgoing free agency. The parties agreed to a three-year, $21.7 million contract, according to various reports.
Pipkins gradually worked his way into a significant role with the Chargers as he started 14 games last season. Many of those assignments came with Pipkins playing through a knee injury, which was among the reasons his stock rose with the Chargers.
Someone not returning is right guard Matt Feiler, as he was shown the door to supply $6.5 million in salary-cap relief and to make room for Jamaree Salyer.
It was Salyer, a sixth-round pick last year, who did wonders in helping to save the Chargers season. When Pro Bowl left tackle Rashawn Slater exited early in the year with a torn biceps tendon, it was a baptism by fire for Salyer and he excelled.
Salyer’s production not only helped keep standout quarterback Justin Herbert upright but he proved to be a steal for Chargers general manager Tom Telesco coming that late in the draft.
With Feiler gone, Salyer will slide inside to left guard with Slater, a 2021 first-round pick, resuming his role at left tackle in protecting Herbert’s blindside.
Corey Linsley will be back at center and Zion Johnson, last year’s first-round pick, stays put at right guard after a solid season.
In a lower-level move for the line, tackle Foster Sarell, an exclusive rights free agent, was tendered an offer by the Chargers.
Kicker Cameron Dicker, who has a similar designation as Sarell, was also tendered.
