FC Barcelona could have sold Ferran Torres in the recently closed January transfer window, according to a report.
The Blaugrana signed the Spain international from Manchester City around a year ago, in a headscratching deal that reportedly set them back more than £48mn ($58mn) despite their financial difficulties.
Torres was among new head coach Xavi Hernandez’s first choices on the attacking line upon arrival and helped the Catalans reach the Champions League.
After the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha were purchased in the summer, however, while Ousmane Dembele’s form also improved, Torres fell down the pecking order at Camp Nou and is now on the outside looking in.
In Xavi’s new four man midfield which has enjoyed great success as Barca boast an eight-point lead at the La Liga summit, there is only one space for a pure winger which has been Raphinha after Dembele picked up a thigh injury.
Torres replaced Raphinha near the death in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Sevilla, but was once more flat and nothing to write home about in his short cameo where he slowed down one move and gave the ball away cheaply.
Barca have been told by La Liga president Javier Tebas that they must eliminate €200mn ($215mn) from their wage bill ahead of next season, which will prompt a big player sale.
According to Mundo Deportivo, however, they could have gotten rid of this problem and a below par Torres after a ‘leading’ Premier
The English outfit was told that Torres does not want to listen to any proposals, however, because he is intent on trying to become an undisputed starter again under Xavi.
Not selling Torres now could prove a misstep from Barca, but they cannot convince Torres to go anywhere considering the length of his contract, which runs until June 30, 2027.
The 22-year-old is under no obligation to up sticks, and could still earn minutes across the rest of the season considering the injury to Dembele and the packed calendar that lies ahead.
He will remain one of the most sellable assets Barca has, however, at a time when it is believed that a similarly out-of-sorts Ansu Fati might be put on the market too.
