Lazy Artists Will Be Born in No Time Thanks to OpenAI’s DALL·E 3

Art like painting and writing was once assisted by a pen or a brush until artificial intelligence (AI) knocked on artists’ doors. OpenAI, an American AI-focused organization, changed the art game. Today, everyone is an artist. All one wants to do is simply think of something, put it in writing, just like a coder inputs a command to develop a program, and leave the rest to AI.

Since the arrival of tools like DALL·E and Midjourney, digital artists have grown significantly. The former recently got an update dubbed DALL·E 3. These programs simply use the data they can access to create highly complicated digital paintings in an instant that traditional methods are unable to.

OpenAI’s latest upgrade comes with a new feature, it can be integrated with ChatGPT. Work here becomes easier as now an artist doesn’t even have to think. ChatGPT does the thinking here. It can come up with prompts that can eventually lead to DALL·E 3 to create a piece.

But the art born out of churning keyboard text with the existing data in AI storehouses lacks emotions and imagination. Before the update, a user had to move her brain muscles to give a command while sitting on a recliner. It took that away too. Sure it has an impeccable memory, but it still lacks the ability to step out of the box.

DALL·E 3 has been here for a few months and it has already started spreading its roots. Apart from ChatGPT, it shook hands with Microsoft’s Bing Chat and Bing Image Creator. However, one cannot create images of public figures as the program refrains from doing that.

Several deep fake videos of celebrities have emerged on the internet that normal eyes aren’t able to differ. Scarlett Johanson who played Black Widow in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), recently found out that a deep fake video using her face was promoting an AI app online without her consent. She is suing the company now.

Handing an AK-47 to a monkey could be tragic. He will only create chaos, but it will only be a fun moment for him. It can be an individual or an entire organization, all it takes is a bad intent to leave crumbs of fake illustrations and people will follow. This May, someone released a fake AI image showing a large explosion near the Pentagon.

Thanks to institutions like Bellingcat, an investigative journalism group, who directed people towards the inadequacies of the image. No eyewitness was present at ‘the scene.’ Moreover, the structure had differences from the original Pentagon building.

AI could replace dangerous or tedious tasks carried out by humans. It can also help replace that time with creative work. However, the train of thought stimulating art is missing here. ‘Lazy artists’ may take over the world, that too without moving their bodies from the couch.

While coining the term ‘artificial intelligence,’ John McCarthy, one of the founding fathers of this technology, would never have thought his thoughts would be manifested in a way that would refrain from the human train of thought to move.

One way or another, artificial intelligence will become a part of our lives. As the mad titan from MCU puts it, “Dread it. Run from it. Destiny arrives all the same. And now it’s here.”
