Topline
Attorneys representing plaintiffs in a lawsuit over the Astroworld music festival—where 10 people were killed during a crowd surge at a Travis Scott concert in November—stated in a court filing nearly 5,000 people were injured at the event, including 700 who required “extensive” medical treatment, Rolling Stone reported Tuesday.
Key Facts
Lawyers Jason Atkin, Richard Mithoff and Sean Roberts reported 732 claims from those injured who required extensive medical treatment, 1,649 who required less extensive treatment, and 2,540 claims of injuries of which the severity is still being determined.
It was not clear how the lawyers categorized the clients between “extensive” and “less extensive” injuries.
It was previously believed that roughly 300 people were injured at the event, in addition to the 10 people who died from compression asphyxia.
Key Background
Hundreds of lawsuits were filed targeting Scott, promoter Live Nation and other organizers of the festival after the November incident, and were ultimately combined into a single suit that is reportedly still in its early stages. A gag order was issued in February surrounding the case. Scott largely laid low for months after the incidents, before launching a community initiative called HEAL in March and appearing to start his comeback into the music industry. Scott performed at his first public concert since the tragedy last weekend and was announced as a headliner for several music festivals this summer. The rapper is set to perform Sunday at the Billboard Music Awards.
Tangent
Criminal charges have not been filed in relation to the incident. Last month, the Texas Task Force on Concert Safety issued a report stating lack of security training and poor communication between staff and law enforcement could have contributed to the tragedy.
