In only a few hours, it’s likely that Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars will hit a very special milestone on multiple charts in the United Kingdom. Their collaboration “Die with a Smile” isn’t just living on multiple lists in that country — it remains a big win. When the Official Charts Company refreshes its rosters again, “Die with a Smile” will almost certainly reach 52 weeks, or its first full year, on several tallies.
The track is sitting in lofty enough positions that it’s difficult to imagine it disappearing before it turns one year old on the chart. In fact, “Die with a Smile” is improving, which helps its chances of becoming a one-year winner.
“Die with a Smile” Becomes a Top 40 Bestseller
Gaga and Mars break back into the top 40 on a pair of charts in the U.K. this week. “Die with a Smile” surges from just beneath that important region to No. 39 on both the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads tallies.
A Rare Year-Long Bestseller
It’s relatively uncommon for songs to continue to sell well months — or even a year — after they are released. Streaming has taken over as the primary way for people to consume popular music, and while purchases do factor into where a track lands on the charts, sales usually drop off after a few frames, or even just a few days, and plays on sites like Spotify usually do the work to keep a cut present on various lists.
“Die with a Smile” is a top 40 bestseller in the U.K. just before it reaches its first year on both the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads rankings, and it could live inside that tier again when it celebrates the milestone.
“Die with a Smile” Wins on Multiple Rankings
The Gaga/Mars team-up can also be found within the top 40 on the Official Singles Streaming chart. Last week, “Die with a Smile” sat at No. 31, and this frame it increases its standing by two slots.
On the Official Singles chart — the most competitive in the U.K. — the song steps up from No. 66 to No. 54.
Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars Reached No. 1 Together
In the past, “Die with a Smile” reached No. 1 on both sales charts. While it didn’t quite conquer either the Official Singles or Official Singles Streaming rankings, it came very close, stalling at No. 2 on each.
Bruno Mars Scores Multiple Big Hits
Mars claims two massive hits in the U.K. this week, as his collaboration with Blackpink star Rosé, “Apt.,” lives on five rosters and is a top 40 win on all of them. Gaga, meanwhile, no longer has any of her other Mayhem tunes on the tallies, and though she has promoted several tracks from her latest full-length since dropping “Die with a Smile,” it’s her vintage duet that is holding on.
