La Salle is hiring Fran Dunphy as its next men’s basketball coach, sources confirmed.
Dunphy, 73, replaces former Villanova assistant Ashley Howard who was fired last month.
Dunphy played at La Salle from 1967-70 and was an assistant there during two stints in the 1970s and ‘80s. He later coached at Penn from 1989-2006 and then at Temple from 2006-19.
For his career, Dunphy is 580-325 (.641) with 17 NCAA Tournament appearances.
He is the third hire in the Atlantic 10 of an experienced coach with a proven track record, following Archie Miller at Rhode Island and Frank Martin at UMass.
