Kim Tae-Gon’s ‘Project Silence’ To Be Shown At Cannes Film Festival

The Korean horror film, Project Silence, starring Lee Sun-kyun and Ju Ji-hoon, has been invited to the 76th Cannes Film Festival and will be shown in the Midnight Screening section. The addition of Project Silence, which was revealed on Monday, brings the number of Korean films being screened to five.

The Midnight Screening section is a non-competition section of the festival, which has hosted a few Korean films in the past, including Train to Busan, The Merciless, The Spy Gone North, and Lee Jung-jae’s directorial debut film Hunt. The Festival reserves a couple of midnight slots for interesting genre films or those with challenging content.

The film’s story follows people struggling to survive a series of crashes that shuts down an Incheon bridge shrouded in thick fog. As if that situation was not bad enough, things get much worse for the film’s protagonists when mutated military dogs are accidentally released from their transport vehicle and start preying on humans. In the film Lee plays Cha Jung-won, a man traveling with his daughter. After the bridge closes down, Jung-won and the other survivors must figure out a way to make it through the night and unravel the mystery of the mutated dogs. Ju plays Joe Park, a brash tow truck driver, who is used to driving around looking for disabled cars.

Lee starred in the Academy Award-winning film Parasite and the Korean TV series My Mister, Dr. Brain and Payback: Money and Power. Ju appeared in films such as Antique and Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds and TV dramas such as Jirisan and the multi-season historical zombie drama Kingdom. The film also stars Park Ju-hyun, Kim Hee-won, Kim Tae-woo, Ye Soo-jung, Park Hee-von and Moon Sung-keun. Actress Kim Su-won will play Jung-won’s daughter.

Project Silence is directed by Kim Tae-gon, who previously directed Microhabitat, The Queen of Crime and The King of Jokgu. Kim is known as the leader of the group KwangHwaMoon Cinema, which promoted a new model of collaborative filmmaking to the Korean industry. He made his feature debut with the indie horror movie The Pot. The screenplay for Project Silence was written by Kim Tae-gon and Kim Jung-hwa.

The 76th Cannes International Film Festival runs from May 18 to 27. The other Korean films that will be aired at the festival include director Kim Chang-hoon’s Hopeless, Kim Jee-woon’s Cobweb, Hong Sang-soo’s In Our Day and Yu Ja-son’s Sleep.
