Nearly a month after SS Rajamouli’s RRR stormed the ticket windows, yet another south Indian film is ruling the Indian box office. Directed by Prashanth Neel, KGF Chapter 2 grossed $72.64 million worldwide. The movie also made it to the second spot at global box office for the April 15 – April 17 weekend, as per Comscore. KGF Chapter 2 stood second only to Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
The Hindi version of KGF Chapter 2 alone made a grand opening of $7.6 million in India on day one of the release and has earned $25.3 million over the extended weekend. The film released globally across 10,000 screens in Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam languages. Apart from the hype around the film and the lead star Yash, KGF Chapter 2 also gained because it was a holiday release. India celebrated Baisakhi, Bohag Bihu, Vishu and Mahavir Jayanti, among a few other festivals over the weekend.
KGF Chapter 2 grossed $17.62 million in India, all languages combined, on the first day while it has earned $1.7 million in the US from premiere shows and opening day collections. By Sunday, the film roughly grossed $4 million in the US markets.
Given the craze that KGF Chapter 2 saw on day one of the release, producers Excel Movies and AA Films are being widely lauded for backing KGF Chapter 1 in 2018 across north-Indian regions. Both films have been produced by Hombale Films.
Featuring Yash in the lead role of Rocky aka Raja Krishnappa Bairya, the film also stars Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Malavika Avinash, John Kokken and Srinidhi Shetty among others. The movie traces Rocky’s story as he braves all odds to create and rule an empire – gold mines that he protects from the world.
Meanwhile, SS Rajamouli’s RRR has earned $137.56 million. It also defeated Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files to top the post-pandemic Hindi films at the box office with $32.3 million from the Hindi version of RRR alone. Tamil film starring Vijay, Beast, also released this weekend and is scoring big at the ticket windows. The film has earned $26.2 million worldwide.
