Topline
Actor Kevin Spacey was granted unconditional bail Thursday after making his first appearance at a London court, where he faces multiple sexual assault charges.
Key Facts
During his court appearance, Spacey did not enter pleas to any of the five charges against him.
Spacey’s defense lawyer Patrick Gibbs told the court that the actor “strenuously denies any and all criminality” in these cases.
The actor’s next court appearance will take place on July 14 at London’s Southwark Crown Court.
Spacey was formally charged in the U.K. earlier this week on four counts of sexual assault against three men and another count of forcing a person to engage in “penetrative sexual activity” without their consent.
Key Background
Charges against Spacey were authorized by the British Crown Prosecution Service last month. In the U.K., Spacey faces accusations stretching back to March 2005. Spacey last month issued a statement to ABC’s Good Morning America where he said he would “voluntarily appear” before courts in the U.K. and was “confident” that he would be able to prove his innocence. The 62-year-old was first accused of sexual assault by actor Anthony Rapp in 2017, after which multiple other accusers have come forward. London’s Old Vic theater—where Spacey served as the artistic director from 2004 to 2015—announced in 2017 that it has received 20 complaints of inappropriate behavior by the actor.
