Key Background
Last year’s ceremony was overshadowed when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, who joked about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, when presenting an award. Will Smith was banned from attending the ceremony for 10 years. Still, the incident is likely to be referenced at this year’s ceremony. The CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Bill Kramer, said the group has implemented a “crisis team” to handle surprises at the event going forward. Typically, Oscar voters ignore blockbuster films when it comes to Best Picture. But this year, three are vying for the top prize: Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way Of Water and Elvis.
What To Watch For
Since Smith can’t attend the awards show, it’s not clear who will present the award for Best Actress. Typically, the previous years’ Best Actor winner presents the award (he won for King Richard). Halle Berry was announced as a presenter, and some are speculating she will hand out the prestigious trophy, as she was the first Black woman, and the only woman of color, to ever win it, for her role in Monster’s Ball in 2001. If frontrunner Michelle Yeoh wins, it could be a full-circle moment.
