Now, their war heads to Ireland.
The much-anticipated rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano is set for Taylor’s homeland — Dublin, Ireland — on May 20 at a location that’s to be decided. The 82,000-seat Croke Park and 13,000-seat 3Arena have been rumored as potential sites.
Taylor’s lightweight belts will be on the line against Serrano, the undisputed featherweight champion who beat Erika Cruz on Saturday night to set up a rematch of one of the greatest women’s fights in boxing history. Taylor won that fight via split decision to defend her undisputed lightweight crown.
After Serrano defeated Cruz by unanimous decision, Taylor accompanied her in the ring to announce the rematch, which will be Taylor’s first professional bout in Ireland.
“This is more than a dream come true — my debut in Ireland against Amanda Serrano, ‘The Real Deal’ Amanda Serrano,” Taylor said. “This is incredible and as I said, the last fight was epic, and I expect nothing less for the next one.”
Here’s the rematch promo from promoter Eddie Hearn:
Their first fight took place on Serrano’s home turf — New York. She was born in Carolina, P.R., but grew up in Brooklyn. It’s only fair that the rematch happens in Taylor’s native country, said Serrano’s trainer, Jordan Maldonado.
“She fought us here in New York. We’re Puerto Rican, but this is basically our home,” Maldonado said. “One of the things that I had said is the only way I would take the Katie Taylor fight is if it is in Ireland. She deserves it.”
Since battling Serrano, Taylor (22-0, 6 KO) defeated Karen Carabajal in October. Serrano (44-2-1, 30 KO) beat Sarah Mahfoud in September to capture the IBF featherweight belt, and Saturday’s victory against Cruz made Serrano the undisputed featherweight champ.
Serrano-Taylor I was a watershed moment for women’s boxing. The bout headlined a card that sold out Madison Square Garden, one of the most famous sporting venues in the world. And their bout ranked as the Fight of the Year, according to many boxing publications and pundits.
“It hit me the next day when I realized the people that tuned in to watch the fight, this was not only boxing fans, it was celebrities outside of boxing that knew who we were, what we were doing,” Serrano said. “Making history. It was just altogether, the week leading up to the fight, the promotion, how Madison Square Garden was promoting the fight, it was just so amazing.”
And their rematch has a chance to be just as amazing.
