The first trailer for The Marvels dropped this morning and it actually looks pretty good. I’m not a big fan of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) as a character— she’s just way too overpowered to be interesting—but I like Kamala Khan (aka Ms. Marvel, played by Iman Vellani) a lot and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) is a character I’m very curious about after WandaVision.
But it’s really Vellani as Kamala Khan that makes this trailer so fun. She’s got so much energy and she’s such a shameless fangirl, it’s really cute to see her wigging out both when she encounters Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and the Flerken doing its freaky tentacle-cat thing.
Speaking of Samuel L. Jackson, I have to just say that of all the great casting choices across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Fury has to be the best. They did a great job with a lot of these characters, but Jackson is just perfect and makes everything he’s in better. That’s one reason I can’t wait for Secret Invasion, which actually looks great.
Here’s the trailer for The Marvels:
There’s not much of an official synopsis here but it’s pretty obvious from the trailer that something funky is going on with these three. Maybe it’s a multiverse related phenomenon, but suddenly whenever one of them uses their powers they switch places with one of the others. It’s basically superhero juggling. It looks like a clever enough concept, though my eternal optimism is always balanced out by the encroaching cynicism I feel about the superhero genre in general, which is feeling quite saturated these days, and perhaps not as great as it used to be. We shall see.
The Marvels lands in theaters on November 10th, 2023.
