The K-pop world has been left reeling after the tragic news that Moonbin, a beloved member of the boy band Astro, was found dead at his home in Seoul. He was the 25.
Astro’s representatives confirmed the devastating news on social media, stating, “On April 19, ASTRO member Moon Bin suddenly left us and became a star in the sky. The label is deeply mourning the deceased in such great sadness and shock.”
Local police released a statement, which was published by Yonhap News, indicating that Moonbin may have taken his own life.
Moonbin had already made a name for himself in the entertainment industry before joining Astro in 2016, having worked as a child model and actor. As part of the K-pop band, he had been involved in the release of an impressive number of music, including three full-length albums and 10 EPs, as well as two single albums, a common format in South Korea of very short collections.
Their music had proved incredibly popular in South Korea, with half a dozen of their albums reaching No. 1 on the charts and many more breaking into the top 10. In the U.S., Astro also enjoyed success, with six of their releases making it into the top 10 on the World Albums chart.
As well as his work with Astro, Moonbin was also a member of a sub-group called Moonbin & Sanha, which saw him collaborate with fellow bandmate Yoon San-ha. The duo had released three EPs, all of which had broken into the top 10 on the South Korean charts. Their most recent offering, Incense, was released in January of this year.
Moonbin’s death has been felt not just by the music industry but by his family, who are understandably devastated by the loss. He is survived by his sister Moon Sua, who is also a member of the K-pop world as part of the group Billlie.
The news of Moonbin’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief on social media, with fans and fellow artists alike sharing their memories of the talented singer and performer.
