The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber keep at No. 1 on the ARIA Singles chart, the main ranking of the most-consumed songs in Australia, with their collaborative track “Stay.” The tune is not new to the peak position on the weekly ranking, and in fact, with one more turn atop the list, the cut makes history.
“Stay” has now spent 16 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the singles ranking in Australia, and this frame helps the track break out of an important tie and earn a spot in the chart annals. The Laroi/Bieber smash is now the longest-running leader in the nation’s history by a male artist. It is also the second-longest-charting champion ever, and it still has a ways to go before it matches the all-time record holder.
Last week, “Stay” was tied with Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” as the second-longest-running No. 1 hit in Australian history and the biggest hit ever among male artists. Both tunes had managed 15 frames on the throne, but now Bieber and Laroi have passed the British singer-songwriter and guitar player. “Shape of You” is now the third-longest-running leader in the country.
Steady in first place and far ahead of all other hits is “Dance Monkey” by Australian pop singer Tones And I. The musician took over the world several years ago with her inescapable earworm, which didn’t just break the all-time record for the most weeks atop the tally, it completely shattered the previous best showing. That cut lived at No. 1 for an incredible 24 weeks between 2019 and 2020.
“Stay” was a huge hit in almost every country, and it helped turn The Kid Laroi from a rising talent to a proper chart-dominator. The tune became his second No. 1 in Australia, his home country, following the success of prior single “Without You,” which benefited from an updated version that featured Miley Cyrus. Both cuts are featured on his debut album F*ck Love, which was twice expanded to include new hits. The first extension included “Without You,” while the F*ck Love 3: Over You deluxe edition added “Stay.”
The Kid Laroi is currently nominated for two Grammys, and in a few weeks he will compete for both Best New Artist and Album of the Year. He is up for the latter award as a featured artist on Bieber’s Justice (Triple Chucks Deluxe), as he joined the Canadian superstar on the tune “Unstable.”
