By May of 2022, Nintendo’s smash hit Smash Bros. Ultimate had sold just over 28 million copies on the Nintendo Switch. By any accounting, the game has been a massive success story for the Japanese game maker.
It’s little wonder that the brawler’s format has been copied over the years, with various indie titles like Brawlhalla copying the formula with great success.
But none of these Smash clones has been quite so successful as the brand new mega-hit MultiVersus. There are a couple reasons for that.
First, Warner Bros. has brought many of its top IPs to the game, from Batman to Bugs Bunny to Game Of Thrones. You can play as Scooby Doo fighting Tom and Jerry. Or Superman punching the crap out of Morty from Rick and Morty (soon, anyways).
The free-to-play game launched in Early Access on July 26th, with its first season—and Battle Pass—landing on August 15th. New characters will follow Morty, with Black Adam, Rick Sanchez and Gremlins’ Stripe all slated to join the fight in coming months.
20 million players is obviously not as impressive as 20 million premium copies sold, but if the seasonal content and Battle Pass can keep players spending money on the game, it could gain even more ground on Smash Bros, especially since it’s available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
