Jordi Alba’s agents have met with FC Barcelona officials to discuss the left back’s potential exit from the club as reported by SPORT.
Around an hour after teammate Sergio Busquets officially announced that he would leave the Blaugrana after almost 15 years in the first team, Alba’s representatives were filmed at Barca headquarters with footage of the incident shared on social media by SPORT.
The Catalan daily newspaper reported that Alba’s lead agent Vicente Fores will meet outgoing sporting director Mateu Alemany with two options at the top of the agenda.
The first could see Alba’s contract rescinded so that he leaves the club at the end of the season, which also gives the player and his camp enough time to find another emoloyer for 2023/2024.
Or, if he wishes to stay, Alba must agree to a salary reduction that will help Barca navigate Financial Fair Play limits.
Alba is set to earn €38 million ($42 million) next term according to SPORT, with €20 million ($22 million) deferred thanks to agreements struck with past president Josep Bartomeu and his successor Joan Laporta.
In light of Busquets’ departure, Alba automatically becomes the highest earner in the squad at a time when Barca have been warned to shed €200 million ($220 million) from the wage bill so that they can make new signings and register the new contracts of current stars such as Gavi and Ronald Araujo.
With Alba now first team coach Xavi Hernandez’s second choice at left back because of the emergence of La Masia pearl Alejandro Balde, his earnings are out of sync with his status at Camp Nou and the club’s debt-ridden economic reality.
Previously, however, Alba has publicly vowed to reduce his salary if that’s what it takes to stay with the club he rejoined in 2012 after previously being rejected and released by its La Masia academy as a teenager.
“It’s a club decision and I’ve always helped when asked,” he pointed out in an interview with MARCA. “Many lies have been told in the press, but in the end I have always been there, no one can say otherwise.”
“There are things that hurt, but you have to know how to live with it. I know my truth and I am very calm. My intention is to help the club and that both parties are happy,” Alba added.
Simultaneously, though, which could mean that Alba’s exit is indeed being discussed on Wednesday, El Chiringuito has reported that the 34-year-old will head to Al-Hilal in the Middle East this summer with Messi and Busquets.
