Jon Bernthal To Return As The Punisher In ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ On Disney+

Jon Bernthal is set to reprise the role of Frank Castle – aka The Punisher – in Marvel Studios’ new series Daredevil: Born Again, starring Charlie Cox as Daredevil.

The new series will be a noticeably elongated 18 episodes instead of the usual 7-10 for high-budget Disney+ series. Vincent D’Onofrio is also back as Kingpin in the series.

Bernthal was originally introduced on Netflix’sNFLX
Daredevil series which was released in three seasons from 2013-2018. The character made his first appearance in season two, portraying a Frank Castle that had recently lost his family and was hunting for their killers whilst dishing out his form of justice wherever he saw fit. He is noted as a true anti-hero across Marvel lore. From 2017-2019 the character gained his own show which lasted for two seasons and was immensely popular for the streaming service.

Marvel made their intentions clear that the characters couldn’t continue on the Netflix service if Disney+ was launching and discontinued multiple series including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and Daredevil.

No one knew what would happen to these established characters until Marvel head Kevin Feige noted that some actors would come back to reclaim their roles in new Disney series’. Cox’s character – Daredevil – was the first to return across Spider-Man: No Way Home, and She-Hulk. This time sporting a more comic book-themed related attire, indicating a notable shift from the Netflix show.

Other actors across the Netflix-based Daredevil series are not set to return currently with Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page, and Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson absent from current plans. Whether these roles will be featured or recast is still not known.

Fans have noticeably been clamouring for the return of Bernthal’s Punisher specifically, with several mentions of critics and entertainment stars being unhappy with the ending of his character on Netflix.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2021, when he had no understanding of what the future of the character would be, Bernthal was direct that he didn’t want the character to be softened and that he would hope any Marvel inclusion would stay true to the character.

“I think if there’s any let up on that character, you do a disservice to the character, to every iteration of the character, to every comic book that’s come before, and to all of the unbelievable fans of the character,” said the actor. “This character means so much to people in the military. So like I said before, it’s not about whether you do the character; it’s about whether you can do it right, and I’m only interested in doing it right.”

With Bernthal signing up fans can expect the same slice of darkness with vengeful justice-based intent, with military precision, the character has grown to be known for. The Daredevil series is scheduled to air in the spring of 2024 with filming starting in New York this month.
