Key Background
Last week a jury decided that Heard defamed Depp in a 2018 op-ed she wrote for the Washington Post. Though she did not name her ex-husband in the piece, she referred to herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Heard also won part of her countersuit against Depp, over comments his lawyer made calling her claims of abuse a hoax. Depp was awarded $10.35 million in damages, and Heard was awarded $2 million. After the trial ended Heard’s lawyer Elaine Bredehoft said she believed social media influenced the decision, saying of the jury, “There’s no way they couldn’t have been influenced by it.” Depp’s lawyers pushed back on Bredehoft’s claims Wednesday, saying the facts spoke for themselves. They also denied claims that there was a coordinated campaign to support Depp, calling them “utterly baseless.”
