Jimin’s new single “Like Crazy,” has made a monumental impact on several Billboard charts, even managing to debut atop a handful. That small list includes the Digital Song Sales and World Digital Song Sales charts, as well as the coveted Hot 100, where Jimin had never ruled before.
The song also makes an important debut on the Streaming Songs chart at No. 35. This ranking lists the tracks that accrued the most streams in the previous tracking period in the U.S. “Like Crazy” accumulated nearly 10.5 million streams on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music in its first week of availability.
This new win marks Jimin’s first time on the Streaming Songs chart, but he is not the first South Korean solo artist to achieve this feat. Psy was the first South Korean musical act to hit the Streaming Songs chart. “Gangnam Style” reached No. 1 on the chart back in 2013, and he followed that up with another hit, “Gentleman,” which also reached the highest spot on the tally a few weeks later. He landed a third placement on the chart in 2014 with his song “Hangover” featuring Snoop Dogg, which peaked at No. 4.
BTS bandmate Jung Kook has also made it to the Streaming Songs chart. Last year, he became the second South Korean soloist to achieve this milestone. He and Charlie Puth’s collaboration, “Left and Right,” eventually reached No. 23 on the chart.
“Like Crazy” debuts at No. 1 on the Hot 100 thanks almost entirely to its massive sales numbers. The Hot 100 ranks the most-consumed songs in America using a methodology that combines radio play, sales, and streams. Since Jimin’s single wasn’t promoted at radio, it barely helped in reaching the top position. The fact that it sold 241,000 copies in a seven-day period is almost exclusively to thank for its leading debut. The millions of streams it earned also played a part in its historic starting position, though they weren’t as important as sales.
