Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez Vs. Srisaket Sor Rungvisai: Odds, Records, Prediction

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez doesn’t have nearly the experience of Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. He doesn’t have the kind of top-notch resume Sor Rungvisai has spent the last eight years formulating. But Rodriguez does have a couple of advantages over one of the best 115-pounders of the last decade, and to defend his super flyweight world title, he’ll have to use them on Saturday night vs. Sor Rungvisai. Here’s everything you need to know about Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez vs. Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, including the odds, their records and a prediction on who will win.

Rodriguez showed just how good he is by outpointing Carlos Cuadras in February to win his world title. But considering Sor Rungvisai has more than three times as many professional fights as he does, Rodriguez knows the kind of experienced talent he faces on Saturday.

“Fighting a guy like Rungvisai is going to bring me to a whole new level,” Rodriguez said. “He’s a great fighter but this is my time now. You have to take risks in this sport, that’s what special fighters do. They said it was a risk for me challenging for a world title fight on short notice, and now they say it’s a risk taking on a fighter like Rungvisai. But this is what I want. These are the types of fights you need so you can be remembered by the fans long after your career is done.”

Even though most of the top stars at super flyweight are rapidly getting older, Rodriguez still has time to potentially clean out the division and make himself a star of the new generation. The top three stars at 115 pounds are Juan Francisco Estrada (who was, until recently, on my pound-for-pound list), Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez and Sor Rungvisai. Cuadras, for the last decade, has been No. 4.

Now that Rodriguez has dispatched Cuadras, he can put his attention on the Big 3. A win vs. Sor Rungvisai would let the boxing world that Rodriguez deserves to be mentioned alongside Estrada and Chocolatito.

“Jesse might be the youngest current world champion, but this is a fight where he can prove he already belongs with the very best in boxing,” his trainer, Robert Garcia, said. “We have a lot of respect for Rungvisai. We know what he is capable of, and he is a great, great fighter but I also know what Jesse is capable. I have so much belief in him, and I know he is ready for this.”

Aside from his youth and his freshness, one other advantage for Rodriguez is that Sor Rungvisai hasn’t been active lately. He’s only fought once in the past 19 months, and he hasn’t faced a truly elite fighter since he lost a close decision to Estrada in 2019. He’s also now 35 years old, so Rodriguez might be catching him at just the right time.

But as Sor Rungvisai told RingTV.com, “Now, I’m hungrier than ever.”

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez vs. Srisaket Sor Rungvisai odds

Rodriguez is a solid favorite, but there’s good value on Sor Rungvisai if you think he’s still viable as a 115-pound champion. As of this writing, Rodriguez is a -500 favorite (bet $500 to win $100), while Sor Rungvisai is a +350 underdog (win $350 on a $100 wager). I’m not sure Sor Rungvisai will win, but if he does, I’d lean more toward the stoppage victory, so that +650 prop bet would be tempting. If I were to bet Rodriguez, I’d go with a decision victory at -138.

If you were looking for a fun parlay for this weekend’s action of boxing (and this is only for entertainment purposes), I might take Rodriguez to win by decision at -138, Jessica McCaskill to beat Alma Ibarra by decision at -225 and Murodjon Akhmadaliev to stop Ronny Rios at -163. All of that would pay out $302 on a $100 wager.

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez vs. Srisaket Sor Rungvisai records

He started his career as a teenager, and so far, Rodriguez been perfect as a pro boxer, going 15-0 with 10 KOs. The 22-year-old is coming off the biggest win of his career vs. Cuadras, but remember, he’s only two years removed from facing opponents with records of 18-6-3 and 25-12-2. So, he doesn’t have a ton of experience.

Despite his recent inactivity, Sor Rungvisai (50-5-1, 43 KOs) has an impressive resume, beating opponents like Chocolatito twice and Estrada. But he’s also lost to Estrada and Cuadras, so he’s certainly not unbeatable at this level. If Rodriguez isn’t an elite talent, he’ll have a tough time scoring the win.

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez vs. Srisaket Sor Rungvisai prediction

As great as Sor Rungvisai is, he hasn’t scored a victory against an elite opponent since 2018. The question is whether Rodriguez is elite enough to win. I think he is, and he’s young and fresh enough that he should outlast Sor Rungvisai. As long as he avoids Sor Runvisai’s massive power, I see Rodriguez winning a close but clear decision. Somewhere in the 116-112 range.
